Transposition means moving every note in a melody up or down by the same interval. C major to G major: every note shifts up 7 semitones. The shape stays identical; only the key changes.
Modes are a different beast: same notes, different . C Ionian = C major. D Dorian uses the same notes but starts on D — and the resulting 'home' shifts the feel from bright to mysterious.
Both are tools for getting more out of the material you already wrote. Transpose to find a key that suits a vocalist; switch modes for instant mood change without learning new chords.
