// WHAT IT DOES
Ear training is the practice of recognising intervals, chord qualities, scale degrees and rhythms by ear instead of guessing. It is the single highest-leverage music skill — pros are pros because they can hear what's happening.
Start simple: identify whether two notes are 'close' or 'far apart', then narrow down to specific intervals. Anchor each interval to a song you already know (Jaws = minor 2nd, Twinkle Twinkle = perfect 5th).
Five minutes a day for three months will radically change how you make music.
Think of it like → Ear training is like learning to taste wine. The more you do it, the more flavours you notice automatically.
▸ WHY YOU CARE
- • Sampling, remixing and transcribing all rely on ear skills.
- • Hearing what you imagine and playing it back becomes possible.
- • Mixing decisions become more confident when your ear is trained.

SoundGym-style musical drills. Train the ear producers actually need.
▸ HOW IT WORKS
▸ Signal flow — watch the dot
▸ SIGNAL FLOW
Glowing dot = your signal travelling through Live.
▸ LISTEN FOR
- • Interval fingerprints becoming automatic.
- • Chord quality identification within 2 seconds.
- • Hearing the in any song within 8 bars.
▸ WALKTHROUGH (5 steps)
- 1. DO: Play a major 3rd and a minor 3rd back to back.▸ LISTEN: Major = brighter; minor = darker. Train the gut response.
- 2. DO: Pick a song. Sing the bassline. Then find it on a keyboard.▸ LISTEN: You're decoding what your ear hears.
- 3. DO: Identify the scale degree of the first note in 5 songs.▸ LISTEN: Pattern emerges — pop songs cluster on 1, 3 and 5 starts.
- 4. DO: Play C, then sing 'so' (G) without checking.▸ LISTEN: Test your internal 5th.
- 5. DO: Identify the bass note of a loaded track by ear.▸ LISTEN: Confirm against a tuner — repeat daily.
▸ COMMON MISTAKES
- ✗ Practising once a week — daily 5 minutes beats weekly 1 hour.
- ✗ Only using one app/ — generalise across sources.
- ✗ Skipping singing — passive listening doesn't lock in pitches.
