Stem DJing

Individual elements of tracks — DJ remixing elevated.

Stems break a track into pieces. Now you don't mix tracks — you mix instruments.

// WHAT IT DOES

Stem DJing separates a track into 4 elements live: vocals, drums, bass, melody/other.

Each stem has its own volume knob. You can drop one element while keeping the others.

Available on rekordbox 6.6+, Stems-enabled CDJ-3000 firmware, and Serato Stems.

Think of it like → A pizza you can pick toppings off in real time. Don't want anchovies on this slice? Gone.
▸ WHY YOU CARE
  • Lets you remove vocals from an outgoing track while bringing in another vocal track — no clash.
  • Mix acapellas with instrumentals from any track in your library.
  • Live remix without prep.

▸ HOW IT WORKS
▸ Signal flow — watch the dot
▸ SIGNAL FLOW
Enable Stems on…INPUTIdentify stems …PROCESSUse stem knobs …GAINWatch CPUOUT
Glowing dot = your signal travelling through Live.
▸ LISTEN FOR
  • Backing vocal bleed when 'vocal off'
  • Drum stem bass bleed
  • CPU strain causing audio glitches
▸ WALKTHROUGH (5 steps)
  1. 1. DO: Enable Stems on Deck 1, play a vocal house track.
▸ LISTEN: 4 stem knobs appear on the deck/app.
  2. 2. DO: Kill the vocal stem.
▸ LISTEN: Track plays as instrumental only.
  3. 3. DO: Bring in Deck 2 (different track with vocals).
▸ LISTEN: Two vocals avoided — only Deck 2 vocal heard.
  4. 4. DO: Try stem swap: kill Deck A bass stem, raise Deck B normally.
▸ LISTEN: Bass swap without EQ touch.
  5. 5. DO: Watch CPU meter — disable stems on idle decks to save load.
    ▸ LISTEN: Performance protection.
▸ COMMON MISTAKES
  • Assuming clean stem separation — quality varies.
  • Leaving stems on all decks — CPU overload.
  • Treating stems as a gimmick — they're a transition tool.
