Mission 035
Key Shifting and Master Tempo
Pitch-shifting tracks for harmonic compatibility.
Key Shift turns 'almost compatible' into 'perfect'. One semitone, one new option.

// WHAT IT DOES
Key Shift pitches a track up or down by semitones without changing its tempo.
Lets you force harmonic compatibility — shift a 9A track down 1 to make it 8A and blend with your current 8A.
Available on CDJ-3000 and rekordbox Performance Mode.
Think of it like → A capo on a guitar. Same chord shapes, different actual pitch. The song now fits a different singer.
▸ WHY YOU CARE
- • Doubles or triples your harmonic options per track.
- • Rescues a track that would otherwise clash.
- • Lets you transition between distant keys via small steps.

▸ HOW IT WORKS
▸ Signal flow — watch the dot
▸ SIGNAL FLOW
Glowing dot = your signal travelling through Live.
▸ LISTEN FOR
- • Pitch artefacts beyond ±2 semitones
- • Vocal unfamiliarity at extreme shifts
- • tail artefacts
▸ WALKTHROUGH (5 steps)
- 1. DO: Current track at 8A; you want to play a 10A track next (incompatible).▸ LISTEN: 10A vs 8A = full step apart on Camelot = clash.
- 2. DO: Shift the 10A track down 2 semitones → now 8A.▸ LISTEN: Now harmonically compatible.
- 3. DO: Pre-listen in cue — verify no audible artefacts.▸ LISTEN: ±2 should be clean.
- 4. DO: Mix in normally — blend works.▸ LISTEN: Harmonic clash avoided.
- 5. DO: Practice plotting 'shift journeys' — distant key reachable via 2 shifts.▸ LISTEN: Composition skill on top of selection.
▸ COMMON MISTAKES
- ✗ Shifting beyond ±2 — sounds wrong.
- ✗ Forgetting to reset Key Shift after — next play uses shifted version.
- ✗ Shifting vocal-heavy tracks aggressively — unrecognisable.
