// WHAT IT DOES
Simpler plays one sample mapped across the keyboard. Sampler is the big sibling: many samples mapped by key and velocity (multi-zone).
Drag a sample onto a MIDI track → Live offers Simpler. For full instruments (sampled grand pianos etc.), use Sampler.
Think of it like → Simpler is a Polaroid. Sampler is a photo album.
▸ WHY YOU CARE
- • Build a one-shot synth-style instrument in 30 seconds (Simpler).
- • Recreate a real instrument with multiple recordings (Sampler).

DRUM RACK PADS
TIP: In Ableton, the Drum Rack maps each pad to a MIDI note. Steps 1–4 = Beat 1, steps 5–8 = Beat 2, and so on. The highlighted step is the playhead — audio is scheduled 300ms ahead of the clock for glitch-free timing.
▸ HOW IT WORKS
MIDI note → look up zone (Sampler) or play sample (Simpler) → envelope/filter → out.
▸ Signal flow — watch the dot
▸ SIGNAL FLOW
Glowing dot = your signal travelling through Live.
▸ LISTEN FOR
- • Classic mode loops the sample by default.
- • 1-Shot ignores note length entirely.
▸ WALKTHROUGH (3 steps)
- 1. DO: Drag a sample onto a MIDI track.▸ LISTEN: Simpler loads, Classic mode by default.
- 2. DO: Switch to 1-Shot.▸ LISTEN: No envelopes — useful for drum hits.
- 3. DO: Right-click → Simpler → Sampler.▸ LISTEN: Same sound, full multi-zone editor now available.
▸ COMMON MISTAKES
- ✗ Using Simpler for grand piano (use Sampler for multi-zone).
- ✗ Pitching down a sample more than an octave in Classic — sounds rough; switch to Warp on.
