Harmony in Production

How to use chords in your tracks practically.

Pads, bass, chord stabs — harmony is layered, not played as one block.

// WHAT IT DOES

In production, harmony rarely lives in one instrument. Typically: bass plays the root, a pad sustains chord tones, a chord stab plays a rhythmic chord, and the melody floats on top.

Each instrument occupies its own register and rhythm, but they all spell the same chord at the same time. The result is fuller than any one part alone.

Layering harmony lets you EQ each part separately, automate them independently, and arrange them differently across sections.

Think of it like → A chord is a single voice singing all the notes at once. Production splits that voice across an ensemble.
▸ WHY YOU CARE
  • Spreads harmony across the frequency spectrum.
  • Each layer can have its own role (, rhythm, accent).
  • Allows arrangement variation — drop pads in verses, bring them back in choruses.

Glowing dot = your signal travelling through Live.
▸ LISTEN FOR
  • Each layer occupying its own register.
  • pumping providing rhythmic glue.
  • Arrangement variation by removing/adding layers.
▸ WALKTHROUGH (5 steps)
  1. 1. DO: Play a Cmaj7 chord all in one synth.
    ▸ LISTEN: Functional but flat.
  2. 2. DO: : bass on C, pad on E-G-B, stab on G-C-E, melody on B.
▸ LISTEN: Same chord, much richer.
  3. 3. DO: Drop the pad in verses; bring it back in choruses.
    ▸ LISTEN: Arrangement contrast.
  4. 4. DO: Layer a piano chord with a saw pad the same notes.
▸ LISTEN: Body + sustain — fuller stack from two timbres.
  5. 5. DO: Drop the 3rd from a chord on bass-heavy sections.
▸ LISTEN: Open 5th avoids low-mid mud when bass is busy.
▸ COMMON MISTAKES
  • All harmony in one synth — flat and CPU-light but boring.
  • Layers competing in the same frequency range.
  • Ignoring voice leading across the ensemble.
