Mission 009
What Is Rhythm?
Pattern, pulse and the feel of time.
Rhythm is the heartbeat of music — pattern in time.

// WHAT IT DOES
Rhythm is what happens when sounds are organised in time. Footsteps, ticking clocks and heartbeats all have rhythm — they place events at predictable intervals.
In music, those events are notes and hits. The pattern of when they land — and how long they last — is what your body locks onto when you nod or dance.
Pitch and melody can be powerful, but rhythm is what gets people moving. Most dance music genres are defined by their rhythmic patterns long before their harmonic ones.
Think of it like → Rhythm is the skeleton of a song. Melody and harmony are the muscle and skin on top.
▸ WHY YOU CARE
- • Without rhythm, a sequence of notes is just sound — not music.
- • Groove, , tightness and feel all live in the rhythm layer.
- • Genres are recognised first by their rhythmic fingerprint (4/4 kick, 808 , dembow, etc.).

DRUM RACK PADS
TIP: In Ableton, the Drum Rack maps each pad to a MIDI note. Steps 1–4 = Beat 1, steps 5–8 = Beat 2, and so on. The highlighted step is the playhead — audio is scheduled 300ms ahead of the clock for glitch-free timing.
▸ HOW IT WORKS
▸ Signal flow — watch the dot
▸ SIGNAL FLOW
Glowing dot = your signal travelling through Live.
▸ LISTEN FOR
- • The pulse — where your foot wants to tap.
- • Backbeat accents on 2 and 4.
- • Subdivision fillers in hats and percussion.
▸ WALKTHROUGH (5 steps)
- 1. DO: Tap along to four songs in different genres.▸ LISTEN: Each has a distinct pulse and accent pattern — that's rhythm.
- 2. DO: Remove the drums from a track using stems.▸ LISTEN: Most genre identity walks out the door with the drums.
- 3. DO: Loop a single kick at 120 BPM.▸ LISTEN: Even one note becomes 'rhythm' once it repeats in time.
- 4. DO: Tap a steady pulse, then accent every 4th tap.▸ LISTEN: Bars emerge from a flat stream of beats.
- 5. DO: Loop a 1-bar drum break and clap the upbeats.▸ LISTEN: Counter-rhythm makes the groove feel deeper.
▸ COMMON MISTAKES
- ✗ Quantising everything to a hard grid and losing feel.
- ✗ Confusing tempo (speed) with rhythm (pattern).
- ✗ Building melody before the rhythm sits.
