Mission 005
Waveforms
The four fundamental shapes of sound.
Four wave shapes. Four totally different vibes. That's classic synthesis 101.

// WHAT IT DOES
Synths are built on a few basic waveform shapes: sine, triangle, square, and sawtooth. Each shape contains a different mix of harmonics, so each has its own character.
Sine = pure and round (sub bass, soft leads). Triangle = soft and hollow (flutey leads). Square = buzzy and woody (chiptune, clarinets). Saw = bright and aggressive (most analog leads and brassy sounds).
Most synth presets you've loved are these shapes filtered, layered, modulated and effected. Once you know the raw shapes, you can hear which is hiding under the patch.
Think of it like → Waveforms are like raw cuts of meat. The recipe (filter, , effects) decides the meal — but you start from the cut.
▸ WHY YOU CARE
- • Choosing the right starting waveform saves a lot of EQ later.
- • Sub-bass = sine 99% of the time. Big leads = saw or square. Soft pads = triangle or filtered saw.
- • Recognising waveforms by ear speeds up sound design hugely.

▸ HOW IT WORKS
▸ Signal flow — watch the dot
▸ SIGNAL FLOW
Glowing dot = your signal travelling through Live.
▸ LISTEN FOR
- • Sine = no buzz.
- • Saw = buzzy and bright.
- • Square = woody/hollow.
▸ WALKTHROUGH (5 steps)
- 1. DO: Load a synth, pick sine, play C2.▸ LISTEN: Pure, round, almost felt.
- 2. DO: Switch to saw at same pitch.▸ LISTEN: Buzzy, bright, classic synth lead.
- 3. DO: Modulate PWM on a square.▸ LISTEN: Sound thickens and animates without any other movement.
- 4. DO: Stack a sine + saw at the same pitch and balance them.▸ LISTEN: Sub weight from sine, presence from saw — classic bass layering.
- 5. DO: Slowly modulate PWM with an LFO at 0.3 Hz.▸ LISTEN: Static patch becomes living, breathing pad.
▸ COMMON MISTAKES
- ✗ Using a saw for sub bass — too many harmonics fight the kick.
- ✗ Picking sine for a 'big' lead — too thin without harmonics.
- ✗ Forgetting to enable anti- on digital synths.
