Warp Modes Deep Dive
Beats, Tones, Texture, Re-Pitch, Complex, Complex Pro — when each wins.
Pick the wrong Warp Mode and your loop sounds mushy. Pick the right one and it sounds like the master.

// WHAT IT DOES
Live's Warp Modes are different time-stretch algorithms. Each is tuned for a different kind of audio — drums, vocals, pads, full mixes. Picking the right one is the difference between a clean stretch and a smeared mess.
The shortcut: drums → Beats. Vocals/bass → Tones (or Complex Pro for clean vocals). Pads/ambient → Texture. Full mixes → Complex Pro. DJ-style speed-and-pitch-together → Re-Pitch.
Think of it like → Like choosing the right blade for the right material — a wood saw won't cut metal.
▸ WHY YOU CARE
- • Loops stretch cleanly to your tempo.
- • Vocals don't get robotic when slowed down.
// SEE & HEAR IT
Off = raw sample (off-grid). On = hits play at your marker positions.
RAW SAMPLE — drag pink markers onto the transient peaks
WARPED RESULT — what Live plays back (preview)
Alignment:DRIFTING (0.28)
Drag the pink warp markers onto the transient peaks (the dashed lines are the grid).
▸ HOW IT WORKS
Audio + warp markers → chosen algorithm → time/pitch decoupled output.
▸ Signal flow — watch the dot
▸ SIGNAL FLOW
Glowing dot = your signal travelling through Live.
▸ LISTEN FOR
- • Transient sharpness on percussive material.
- • Formant character on stretched vocals.
▸ WALKTHROUGH (3 steps)
- 1. DO: Drop a drum loop, set to Beats. Stretch +20%.▸ LISTEN: Tight, no smearing.
- 2. DO: Switch to Complex Pro.▸ LISTEN: Transients soften; loop loses punch.
- 3. DO: Drop a vocal, Tones mode, stretch -20%.▸ LISTEN: Clean slow-down.
▸ COMMON MISTAKES
- ✗ Defaulting to Complex Pro for everything — CPU and softness.
- ✗ Forgetting Re-Pitch shifts pitch with speed.
