Filters — Carving The Sound
Start bright. Take frequencies away.
Start bright. Take frequencies away. That's subtractive synthesis.

// WHAT IT DOES
A filter removes frequencies from a signal. The most-used kind by miles is the : keep the lows, throw away the highs above a chosen cutoff frequency.
Two main controls: cutoff (where the cut begins) and (how much you boost frequencies right AT the cutoff). High makes the filter 'sing' at the cutoff point.
Other shapes: (keeps highs, cuts lows — thins a bass), band-pass (keeps a slice in the middle — telephone), notch (cuts a slice — useful for de-honking).
Think of it like → Cutoff is the height of a wall. Resonance is the searchlight at the top. Frequencies above the wall can't pass; frequencies right at the wall get extra bright under the light.
▸ WHY YOU CARE
- • The filter is the single most expressive control on any synth. Moving the cutoff changes the entire character of the sound in real time.
- • Almost every 'wow' moment in dance music is a filter sweep.
- • It's how you go from 'raw oscillator' to 'finished sound'.
// SEE & HEAR IT
▸ The envelope opens the filter on attack, settles at sustain, closes on release. Big ENV + short DEC = the classic synth pluck.
▸ HOW IT WORKS
▸ Signal flow — watch the dot
▸ SIGNAL FLOW
Glowing dot = your signal travelling through Live.
▸ LISTEN FOR
- • Brightness fades from the top first, not the bottom.
- • Resonance creates a pitched 'singing' at the cutoff.
- • Very low cutoff makes even a saw sound dark and muddy.
▸ WALKTHROUGH (4 steps)
- 1. DO: Init the synth to a saw. Drop a low-pass filter wide open (cutoff at max).▸ LISTEN: Bright, buzzy saw.
- 2. DO: Slowly pull cutoff down to ~500 Hz.▸ LISTEN: Brightness disappears layer by layer.
- 3. DO: Raise resonance to 8.▸ LISTEN: A whistle appears at the cutoff frequency.
- 4. DO: Sweep cutoff up and down with high resonance.▸ LISTEN: The classic 'wah'.
▸ COMMON MISTAKES
- ✗ Pushing cutoff fully closed and wondering where the sound went.
- ✗ Cranking resonance without a on the master — dangerous peaks.
