// WHAT IT DOES
Drop any mixed audio clip into Live, right-click it, and choose Separate Stems. Live analyzes the mix using an AI model running on your computer (no internet required) and creates four separate audio clips: drums, bass, melody, and everything else. You can then process each element independently — EQ the bass, add reverb to the melody, or sample the drums into a Drum Rack.
Think of it like → Stem Separation is like reverse engineering a meal — you can figure out what ingredients were used and separate them back out, more or less.
▸ WHY YOU CARE
- • Sample any song without needing the original stems — extract a bassline, isolate a vocal, grab a drum groove.
- • Fix a mix where elements were baked together — boost the bass on a stem without affecting the drums.
- • Creative remixing: use the melody stem as a granular source in Granulator III.

▸ Click SPLIT STEMS, then mute/solo any stem. This is exactly what Live 12's stem split does in one right-click.
▸ LISTEN FOR
- • Bleed between stems in complex arrangements — the drums stem will have some bass, the bass stem some kick
- • How separation quality varies with source material density
▸ COMMON MISTAKES
- ✗ Expecting perfect separation — stems always have some bleed; treat them as starting points not final outputs
- ✗ Trying to separate already heavily processed/limited masters — headroom matters for the AI model
