Polyrhythm
Two rhythms at once — and why it hypnotises.
Two rhythms at once that share a downbeat but disagree everywhere else.

// WHAT IT DOES
A polyrhythm is two or more independent rhythms playing simultaneously, each with its own pulse. The most famous example is '3 against 2' — one voice plays 3 evenly-spaced hits while another plays 2 in the same span.
They line up on beat 1 and at the end of the cycle, but everywhere in between they pull against each other. Your ear flips between hearing the 3 and hearing the 2.
Polyrhythms add motion and complexity without changing tempo. African drumming, prog rock, modern electronic music and jazz all use them constantly.
Think of it like → Two people clapping different patterns that meet on beat 1. The longer the cycle, the deeper the trance.
▸ WHY YOU CARE
- • Adds rhythmic interest without adding faster notes.
- • Creates an 'awake' feel — the brain has to track two patterns at once.
- • Common in pop too: triplet hats over straight kick is a polyrhythm.

DRUM RACK PADS
TIP: In Ableton, the Drum Rack maps each pad to a MIDI note. Steps 1–4 = Beat 1, steps 5–8 = Beat 2, and so on. The highlighted step is the playhead — audio is scheduled 300ms ahead of the clock for glitch-free timing.
▸ HOW IT WORKS
▸ Signal flow — watch the dot
▸ SIGNAL FLOW
Glowing dot = your signal travelling through Live.
▸ LISTEN FOR
- • The where every voice lands together — your anchor.
- • Your perception flipping between hearing the 3-pattern and the 2-pattern.
- • The trance / hypnotic feel that emerges from long cycles.
▸ WALKTHROUGH (5 steps)
- 1. DO: Program 3 evenly-spaced hits per bar on a conga and 2 per bar on a wood block at 100 BPM.▸ LISTEN: Classic 3:2 polyrhythm — both align on beat 1.
- 2. DO: Add a 4-pulse kick to ground the pulse.▸ LISTEN: Now 4:3:2 — feels endlessly rotating but anchored.
- 3. DO: Pan congas hard left and wood block hard right.▸ LISTEN: Both patterns audible as separate streams instead of one busy texture.
- 4. DO: Loop two clips of different lengths (4 bars vs 3 bars) — that's polymeter, not polyrhythm.▸ LISTEN: Downbeats relative to each other until they realign at bar 12.
- 5. DO: Slow the tempo to 70 BPM and re-listen.▸ LISTEN: Polyrhythm clarifies — your brain can track both voices instead of blurring them.
▸ COMMON MISTAKES
- ✗ Treating triplets as polyrhythm when there's no second steady voice.
- ✗ Polyrhythms with no clear downbeat — listener gets lost.
- ✗ Loud polyrhythms drowning the main pulse.
- ✗ Mixing both voices to mono dead-centre — they collapse into noise.
