Mission 012
Groove and Feel
Why a drum machine does not always sound human.
Groove is microtiming — the tiny shifts that make a beat human.

// WHAT IT DOES
If every note lands exactly on the grid, the beat sounds robotic. Real drummers — and great programmers — push some notes slightly early or late on purpose. That micro-timing is groove.
is the most famous example: every off-beat 16th note is pushed slightly later, giving a triplet feel inside a straight meter. Hip-hop, blues and UK garage all live and die by amount.
You can also change accent (which hits are loud vs quiet) and articulation (length of each note) to create groove without moving timing at all.
Think of it like → A perfect grid is a robot walking. Groove is a human swinging their hips.
▸ WHY YOU CARE
- • Same notes + different groove = different song.
- • Groove turns a sketch into a vibe.
- • DJ-friendly genres rely on groove templates that match across tracks.
// SEE & HEAR IT
SOURCE LOOP → GROOVE POOL → TARGET MIDI
SOURCE (sampled break)
TARGET — STIFF MIDI
TARGET + GROOVE APPLIED
▸ Timing amount = how far notes slide toward the sampled feel. Velocity amount = how much dynamics borrow from the source.
▸ HOW IT WORKS
▸ Signal flow — watch the dot
▸ SIGNAL FLOW
Glowing dot = your signal travelling through Live.
▸ LISTEN FOR
- • Late snare backbeats giving a 'laid-back' feel.
- • Early hats giving an 'on-top' push.
- • differences accenting beats 1 and 3.
▸ WALKTHROUGH (5 steps)
- 1. DO: Program a straight 16th hi-hat pattern.▸ LISTEN: Mechanical, sewing-machine feel.
- 2. DO: Apply 66% swing.▸ LISTEN: Hats now lope — classic shuffle.
- 3. DO: Vary velocities ±20 randomly.▸ LISTEN: Suddenly feels played, not programmed.
- 4. DO: Apply 56% swing to a straight 16th hat pattern.▸ LISTEN: Stiff loop instantly feels human and bouncy.
- 5. DO: Nudge the snare 5 ms late on a tight pattern.▸ LISTEN: Pocket deepens — laid-back without dragging.
▸ COMMON MISTAKES
- ✗ Applying swing to a kick drum that should stay locked.
- ✗ Random humanisation instead of intentional pattern.
- ✗ Forgetting to apply groove consistently across the kit.
