Glue Compressor

The bus compressor that makes a mix feel like one record.

The bus compressor that makes a mix sound like one record, not many tracks.

// WHAT IT DOES

Glue Compressor is Live's emulation of the SSL G-bus compressor — the unit on the master bus of countless hit records. On a drum bus or master, 1–3 dB of gain reduction is enough to make everything feel like one cohesive thing.

It's a stereo VCA design with fast attack, musical auto-release, and a soft clipper at the output. Plug it in, set Threshold for 1–3 dB GR, and you're done.

Think of it like → Like the glue holding the mix together — invisible if it's working, obvious if it's missing.
▸ WHY YOU CARE
  • Mixes feel cohesive instead of separate tracks playing together.
  • Adds punch and density without obvious 'compressed' character.

WHAT CHANGED
  • Defaults — toggle A/B or load a preset to hear the device.
WHAT TO LISTEN FOR
  • A/B — should barely hear difference. That's correct.
  • Aim for 1–3 dB gain reduction on peaks only.
  • Without it, the mix feels separated and amateur.
HOW TO USE
Press PLAY → tap a PRESET → toggle A/B to compare dry vs processed. Twist knobs to hear how each parameter changes the sound.

▸ HOW IT WORKS

Bus signal → sidechain HPF → VCA detector → gain reduction → makeup gain → soft clipper → out.

▸ LISTEN FOR
  • Cohesion — tracks 'lock together'.
  • Soft transient catch on peaks.
▸ WALKTHROUGH (3 steps)
  1. 1. DO: Drop Glue on the master. Threshold for ~2 dB GR.
▸ LISTEN: Mix tightens; nothing obvious.
  2. 2. DO: Switch SC HPF to 90 Hz.
▸ LISTEN: Kick stops triggering excess GR.
  3. 3. DO: Add 3 dB makeup.
▸ LISTEN: Mix loudness up without limiter pumping.
▸ COMMON MISTAKES
  • Pushing 6+ dB GR on the master — pumping artifacts.
  • Skipping SC HPF on bass-heavy material.
