Mission 028
Effects in Performance
Echo, reverb, filter — tools for drama and texture.
FX are spice. A pinch transforms; a handful ruins.

// WHAT IT DOES
DJ effects (FX) are real-time audio processors: filter, , , , roll, etc.
Applied to a deck or to the master output; controlled by dry/wet (amount) and beats (time division).
Used to transition, build tension, fill a gap, or recover a mistake.
Think of it like → FX are like film camera angles. Cut to a dramatic angle for emphasis; use one every shot and the film is unwatchable.
▸ WHY YOU CARE
- • Filter sweeps mask transitions.
- • Echo extends a phrase by repeating it as the next track enters.
- • Reverb adds depth to breakdowns.
// SEE & HEAR IT
No simulator for this mission — read & quiz only.
▸ HOW IT WORKS
▸ Signal flow — watch the dot
▸ SIGNAL FLOW
Glowing dot = your signal travelling through Live.
▸ LISTEN FOR
- • Reverb mud = too much, too long
- • Echo feedback runaway = need to disengage
- • Filter sweep landing on phrase = clean transition
▸ WALKTHROUGH (5 steps)
- 1. DO: Select Echo FX, set time to 1/2 beat.▸ LISTEN: Echo will repeat every half-beat at current BPM.
- 2. DO: Mid-track, slowly raise dry/wet from 0 to 60%.▸ LISTEN: Echo tail builds, fills space.
- 3. DO: On a phrase boundary, slam dry/wet to 0.▸ LISTEN: FX cuts dead, room punches back to dry signal — dramatic moment.
- 4. DO: Try filter sweep: cutoff swept from 20kHz to 200 Hz over 8 bars.▸ LISTEN: Track muffles progressively — transition build.
- 5. DO: Practice 'echo out': kick echo at 1 bar from end of phrase, let it tail into next track.▸ LISTEN: Phrase extends via echo into the next.
▸ COMMON MISTAKES
- ✗ Reverb on every track — every section sounds the same.
- ✗ Echo without disengaging before next track enters — clashes.
- ✗ FX as a panic button — masks technique problems instead of solving them.
