Drum Sampler
Modern, multi-sample drum hits with built-in shaping.
One device per pad, replacing the old Simpler-plus-stack workflow.

// WHAT IT DOES
Drum Sampler is the new default device on each Drum Rack pad in Live 12. It plays one-shot drum samples and adds the shaping you used to chain after Simpler — pitch envelope, drive, filter, compression — all in one panel.
Drag a folder of velocity layers in and it maps them automatically: soft hits land on low layers, hard hits on high. Round-robin variation cycles between samples on repeated hits so a 16th-note hat doesn't sound like a machine gun.
Think of it like → Like upgrading from a single-shot snare cap to a multi-mic kit — same instrument, way more life.
▸ WHY YOU CARE
- • Punchier drums without stacking devices.
- • Realistic kits with velocity layers and round-robin out of the box.

DRUM RACK PADS
TIP: In Ableton, the Drum Rack maps each pad to a MIDI note. Steps 1–4 = Beat 1, steps 5–8 = Beat 2, and so on. The highlighted step is the playhead — audio is scheduled 300ms ahead of the clock for glitch-free timing.
▸ HOW IT WORKS
Trigger note → pick velocity layer → round-robin variant → pitch env + filter + drive + comp → out.
▸ Signal flow — watch the dot
▸ SIGNAL FLOW
Glowing dot = your signal travelling through Live.
▸ LISTEN FOR
- • Velocity does more than just volume.
- • Repeated hits subtly differ.
▸ WALKTHROUGH (3 steps)
- 1. DO: Drop Drum Sampler on a pad. Drag a multi-velocity snare folder in.▸ LISTEN: Soft hits soft, hard hits hard.
- 2. DO: Set pitch env decay to 50 ms, depth +12.▸ LISTEN: Snare gains a punchy thump on the front.
- 3. DO: Add round-robin variants.▸ LISTEN: Repeated 8th-note hits stop sounding identical.
▸ COMMON MISTAKES
- ✗ Loading one sample and expecting variation.
- ✗ Cranking drive past the point of crunch.
